The South Korean army has called for the evacuation of the island of Yeonpyeong near the border. North Korea has fired coastal artillery, while the army in the South is planning an exercise.

Shortly after the announcement of the evacuation came, the South Korean defense stated that the neighbor to the north had fired over 200 coastal artillery shells at the west coast.

All the shells landed north of the dividing line between the two neighboring countries’ waters, and no injuries or material damage have been reported in the south.

The defense says North Korea’s actions are increasing tensions in the region.

“This is an act of provocation that escalates tensions and threatens peace on the Korean peninsula,” said a spokesman for South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff.

The evacuation of Yeonpyeong came after a newspaper wrote that the South Korean military will resume practice firing with live ammunition.

A local official confirms that it is the defense that has requested the evacuation.
