A statement by the South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff said, “North Korea launched an unspecified ballistic missile towards the East Sea,” referring to the Sea of Japan.
The Japanese government confirmed on the X platform that North Korea had fired “what appeared to be a ballistic missile,” without providing further information.
The launch came after Seoul detected another short-range ballistic missile launched from the Pyongyang region late Sunday night.
The South Korean Army’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said the missile flew about 570 kilometers before falling into the East Sea, adding that Seoul, Washington and Tokyo “closely exchanged information regarding the North Korean ballistic missile.”
Last year, North Korea declared itself an “irreversible” nuclear power, stressing that it would not abandon its nuclear program, which the regime in Pyongyang considers necessary for its survival.
Last month, Pyongyang succeeded in placing a military spy satellite into orbit, and later claimed that the satellite appeared to provide it with images of key American and South Korean military sites.
