North Korea Conducts Second Test Launch of New Cruise Missiles, State Media Reports
Kim Jong Un oversees successful test, as North Korea accelerates its naval armament
North Korea, on Sunday, conducted its second test launch of new cruise missiles within a week, according to state media. The test showcases North Korea’s dedication to accelerating its navy’s nuclear armament.
Successful Long-Distance Flight
The official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported that North Korea’s dictator, Kim Jong Un, oversaw the launch of the Pulhwasal-3-31 missile. The missiles, which flew over the sea of the country’s east coast, successfully hit an unspecified island target after a flight of over two hours (7,421 seconds and 7,445 seconds).
Significant Strategic Success
KCNA reported Kim’s statement that the test is of strategic significance as part of North Korea’s plan to build a powerful naval force and modernize its army.
Increasing Tensions in the Region
Tensions have been escalating in the region as Kim Jong Un continues to accelerate weapons development and make provocative threats towards the United States and its Asian allies. In response, the United States, South Korea, and Japan have been carrying out combined military exercises, which have been condemned by Kim.
Nuclear-Capable Cruise Missile
The cruise missiles tested by North Korea have the potential to eventually carry nuclear warheads, according to KCNA. These developments raise concerns among neighboring countries.
Continued Weapons Testing
Over the past few months, North Korea has conducted tests involving various weapons, including ballistic missile systems and underwater drones. KCNA also reported Kim’s inspection of nuclear submarine construction, indicating the country’s interest in manufacturing different types of warships.
International Concerns
North Korea’s weapons developments have raised international concerns. It has been accused of providing artillery shells, missiles, and other supplies to Russia for the war in Ukraine, resulting in economic assistance and military technology support. While North Korea and Russia have denied these claims, U.S. and Ukrainian intelligence agencies argue that North Korean weapons have been used in Ukraine.
Meeting Between Kim Jong Un and President Putin
Kim Jong Un has met with Russian President Putin in the past and the two leaders are scheduling another meeting. These interactions raise further questions about international relationships and their impact on global security.
