North Korea Conducts Underwater Nuclear Weapon Test as South Korea, US, and Japan Hold Joint Naval Exercises

These lessons “seriously threaten [Ziemeļkorejas] security,” so Pyongyang “conducted an important test of its under-development Haeil-5-23 underwater nuclear weapon system in the East Sea of Korea,” the Defense Ministry said in a statement carried by state news agency KCNA.

Pyongyang announced early last year that it had conducted several tests of a nuclear-capable underwater drone and claimed it was capable of unleashing a “radioactive tsunami.” This drone is a different version of “Haeil” whose name means tsunami in Korean.

Analysts have questioned whether Pyongyang actually has such a weapon.

South Korea, the United States and Japan this week held joint naval exercises at sea off Jeju Island in southern South Korea, calling it a response to North Korea’s test of an intermediate-range solid-fuel ballistic missile on Sunday. The missile fired on Sunday afternoon was equipped with a guided hypersonic warhead.

Nine warships participated in the exercise, including the US aircraft carrier “Carl Vinson”.
