North Korea Conducts Simulated Nuclear Attack Drill in Response to US-South Korea Joint Drills

North Korea conducted a simulated tactical nuclear attack exercise early Saturday that involved firing two long-range cruise missiles carrying dummy nuclear warheads, state media reported, in response to joint drills by the United States and South Korea.

North Korea’s state news agency KCNA said the drills were held to “warn enemies of the real danger of nuclear war,” as Pyongyang vowed again to bolster its military deterrence against Washington and Seoul.

“The DPRK’s nuclear force will strengthen its responsible fighting stance by all means to deter war and maintain peace and stability,” the KCNA statement said.

The two missiles carried dummy nuclear warheads and were fired towards the western sea of the Korean peninsula, covering a distance of 1,500 km and flying at an altitude of 150 meters.

A separate statement said Kim visited the Pukgung Machinery Complex, which produces marine engines, and a large munitions factory to stress the importance of strengthening North Korea’s navy.

The annual joint summer exercises between South Korea and the United States, known as the “Ulchi Freedom Shield”, concluded Thursday, after lasting 11 days, and included air exercises with B-1B bombers.
