North Korea has confirmed it is closing some of its embassies abroad, a decision South Korea says is another sign of the North’s economic problems amid ongoing international sanctions, the AP reported.

Earlier this week, the government in South Korea said that North Korea was preparing to close its embassies in Uganda, Angola and Spain, as well as its consulate in Hong Kong, as the imposed sanctions prevent Pyongyang from conducting illegal activities abroad and earning money for its operating costs.

According to data from the South Korean government, North Korea has diplomatic relations with more than 150 countries, but maintains only about 50 diplomatic missions abroad.

North Korea’s foreign ministry said it would “close some and open new embassies in other countries” in line with changes in the North’s international environment and foreign policy.
