North Korea Abandons Reunification Goal with South Korea: Kim Jong-un

North Korea will no longer seek reunification with South Korea, North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un announced at the ruling Workers’ Party Central Committee plenary on Sunday.

“We should no longer make the mistake of seeing them as a partner for reconciliation and reunification because South Korea has declared us as its main enemy,” Kim was quoted as saying in the plenary’s closing speech, according to North Korean state media.

“The relationship between South Korea and North Korea is no longer that of people belonging to the same nation,” Kim stressed, noting that the relationship is now that of countries at war.

In the current situation, Pyongyang should review its stance on unification policy, the dictator added.

Analysts say this is the first time North Korea has announced it is abandoning its goal of reunifying the two countries on the Korean Peninsula.

“Due to the reckless actions of our enemies to invade our country, it is clear that war may break out on the Korean Peninsula at any moment,” Kim said in his closing speech to the plenum.

He said the North Korean military should be prepared to “pacify the entire South Korean territory” with nuclear weapons if necessary in the event of an attack on North Korea.

In a speech to the plenum on Thursday, Kim reportedly called on the party to “further speed up preparations for war” in all sectors, including nuclear weapons and civil defense.

He also stressed that the “military situation” on the Korean Peninsula has become “extreme” due to Washington’s expanded “unprecedented” confrontation.

Seoul, Tokyo and Washington have stepped up defense cooperation in the wake of Pyongyang’s record series of weapons tests this year, and recently activated a system to share real-time data on North Korean missile launches.
