The North Kivu Provincial Blood Transfusion Centre (CPT) has been facing a critical shortage of blood bags for several days.

The head of this structure, Liliane Bwiza, indicated on Tuesday, September 3, that this alarming and catastrophic situation has never been experienced for 17 years.

She called for immediate assistance from the Government and various partners to save thousands of human lives in danger.

The blood bank of the provincial blood transfusion center, all groups combined, is currently emptied of its blood reserves.

This situation is similar in all medical structures in the province of North Kivu, said Dr Liliane Bwiza:

“We have a shortage of blood for almost all blood groups. We can no longer meet the demands of hospitals. And it’s not just in Goma, it’s in the whole province.”

For now, the situation is catastrophic and cases of deaths due to this blood deficiency are reported in several medical facilities across the province, she said.

“We are in an alarming situation, a catastrophic situation. I can tell you that we have already started to record deaths. And this is unprecedented.”

According to Dr. Liliane Bwiza, the response from the provincial authorities to this thorny question is still slow in coming.

All efforts by Radio Okapi to obtain the reaction of health officials in the provinces have been unsuccessful.
