North Darfur food aid halted after looting, 2 million people hit

After attacks on three food depots in the Sudanese state of North Darfur, the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) is forced to stop there immediately. The forced decision is expected to affect about two million people.

In the evening of December 28, the attacks began in the capital, El Fasher. They continued until the morning of December 30. About 5 million kilos of food have been taken by hundreds of looters, writes the WFP. The stolen food cannot be supplemented with food from other parts of the country, because shortages will arise in those places.

“WFP is outraged by these senseless attacks and condemns in the strongest possible terms the continued looting. As a result, we have been forced to suspend WFP operations in North Darfur with immediate effect,” said Director David Beasley.

Need help for 11 million people

The humanitarian organization wants the Sudanese government to ensure more security in North Darfur. It is also necessary that the stolen food is returned. Nearly 11 million people in Sudan will need additional food and livelihoods next year, according to the WFP.
