Next, Madison County Sheriff Buddy Harwood; He said the decision was made to help his officers be prepared to take action in the event of an active shooter situation in the district.

“I just want to make sure my agents are prepared in case that happens”; said the bailiff

In addition to firearms, Harwood said every school building in the district has been equipped with a safe that will store additional ammunition for the rifles. The safes will also be provided with “breakout tools”; that could be used in the event that a shooter has barricaded himself in a classroom as happened in Uvalde.

Following the decision, gun safety experts and advocates have denounced the decision in the Madison County. Allison Anderman, senior counsel and director of local policy for the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, called the move “horrible” in response to the shootings in a statement to USA Today.
