North and East Bavaria are the focus of warning strikes in today’s ticker

The north and east of Bavaria are the focus of the warning strike today

Wednesday, March 22, 6:21 a.m.: The warning strikes in the public sector continue on Wednesday in northern and eastern Bavaria. Verdi has called for action in the trade union districts of Central Franconia, Lower Bavaria, Würzburg/Aschaffenburg, Upper Franconia-West and East. The expected largest rally is expected in Nuremberg at 11:00 a.m. on the Kornmarkt, where the union is hoping for 8,000 participants.

As a rule, as on Monday and Tuesday in other parts of the country, employees in all areas of public service are called to go on warning strikes – from daycare to clinics, administration and employment agencies to garbage disposal. In local transport, however, there are only isolated actions, for example in Bayreuth. Although there are collective bargaining there too, in Bavaria they are separate from those in the public sector.

In addition, isolated campaigns in other Bavarian regions have also been announced. In Augsburg, for example, employees in waste management, the building department and public utilities want to stop working again after Monday.

According to Verdi, the willingness to strike is very high. According to the union, more than 10,000 workers took part in warning strikes on Tuesday.

In Bavaria, several collective bargaining conflicts are currently running in parallel. In local public transport, there are identical demands as in the public service, but the negotiations are separate. In the public sector, Verdi wants 10.5 percent more wages for the 2.5 million federal and municipal employees nationwide, but at least 500 euros more per month. Employers are gradually offering 5 percent more for a two-year term and a one-time payment of 2,500 euros. The third round of negotiations is scheduled for the end of March.

Doctors step in warning strike – Restrictions in clinic operations

7.01 a.m.: Doctors in municipal clinics in Berlin and Brandenburg are going on a day-long warning strike on Tuesday in a nationwide wage dispute over more money. There may be restrictions in hospital operations at three facilities. Above all, some of the planned interventions have to be postponed. Doctors in many other federal states are also being asked to stop working.

According to the Marburger Bund, the Ernst von Bergmann Clinic in Potsdam is affected, and the Helios Clinic in Berlin-Buch. Rallies (from 1 p.m.) are planned at both houses. Doctors are also going on warning strikes at the University Hospital in Brandenburg/Havel. Emergency treatments should be guaranteed in the clinics. The trade union organized a central rally in Hamburg.

The Marburger Bund is calling for a 2.5 percent salary increase for the 55,000 doctors in municipal hospitals. In addition, effective January 1, 2023, the union wants compensation for price increases that have accumulated since the most recent wage increase in October 2021. The association of municipal employers’ associations criticized the strike announcement as exceeding every measure. The demands for inflation compensation plus an additional increase in wages would add up to almost twelve percent. This is not affordable for municipal hospitals. The next round of negotiations is scheduled for April 3rd and 4th.

New highlight of the warning strikes in Bavaria

Tuesday, March 21, 6:56 a.m.: The warning strikes in Bavaria are heading towards their peak for the week. Public service campaigns in Munich and the districts of Oberpfalz, Ingolstadt, Niederbayern, Oberfranken Ost and Schweinfurt are planned for Tuesday. Middle Franconia, Würzburg/Aschaffenburg, Upper Franconia-West, Lower Bavaria and Upper Franconia-East will follow on Wednesday. Partial failures in local public transport are also to be expected.

Verdi has announced a “major strike day” for Munich. Here, practically all areas of public service with tens of thousands of employees have been called on to go on warning strikes. In addition to daycare centers and waste management, this applies to the entire city administration, street cleaning, large parts of the municipal utilities, the Munich Clinic and the Stadtsparkasse. There are also work stoppages in job centers, at the district youth council, in surrounding districts in the cities, municipalities and district offices as well as in the armed forces and institutions for the disabled.

Local transport in Munich, on the other hand, is currently not taking part in the warning strikes. Here the employees have already achieved some of their goals with the offer from the Munich transport company to take over the collective wage agreement in the future. In Regensburg and Bayreuth, on the other hand, bus traffic is affected.

Employers are gradually offering five percent more for a two-year term and a one-off payment of 2,500 euros. The third round of negotiations is scheduled for the end of March.

No local public transport in a number of cities in North Rhine-Westphalia

Monday, March 20, 06:26: Anyone who normally travels by “public transport” has to look for alternatives in many places at the beginning of the week: in a number of NRW cities, local public transport companies are on strike on Monday and Tuesday. Among other things, there will probably be no buses or trains in Düsseldorf, Cologne and Oberhausen.

The Verdi trade union, for example, has called on employees of the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn, the railways in the city of Monheim and the Regiobahn to go on warning strikes. According to the Rheinbahn, their entire network is affected, i.e. the cities of Düsseldorf and Meerbusch, the Mettmann district and the connections to Duisburg, Krefeld, Neuss and Ratingen.

The employees of the Ruhrbahn and Stoag have also been called to a two-day warning strike. Verdi assumes that local traffic in Essen, Mülheim and Oberhausen will come to an almost complete standstill for two days.

The Kölner Verkehrs-betriebe (KVB) informed their customers that from Monday morning at 3 a.m. to Wednesday morning at 3 a.m. no trams and KVB buses would be able to run. Only the bus trips that are regularly carried out by subcontractors could take place. According to Verdi, employees of transport companies should also stop working in numerous other cities.

All 134 planned flights can take place, as a spokeswoman said in the morning. According to the airport association ADV, more than 76,000 passengers were affected. Verdi last called for a warning strike at Stuttgart Airport on February 17. At that time, too, operations were paralyzed there. Stuttgart Airport had previously expected normal operations for Saturday. To be on the safe side, passengers should check the status of their flight in advance, the airport spokeswoman recommended. Occasionally it can happen that a machine is not yet at the airport as planned.

warning strike paralyzes Stuttgart Airport again – also affects NRW

Thursday, March 16, 7:10 a.m.: There will again be no regular flight operations at Stuttgart Airport and the largest airports in North Rhine-Westphalia on Friday. This was announced by the Stuttgart, Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports on Wednesday after the Verdi union called for a strike. Only security landings, medical flights and military flights could be carried out in Stuttgart, it said. A regular 169 flight movements were planned for Friday, and around 20,000 passengers are affected by the warning strike. The airport recommended getting information from the airlines and not coming to the airport.

Düsseldorf and Cologne/Bonn airports are also expecting significant restrictions in view of the warning strikes announced for Friday. “Significant disruptions to flight operations are to be expected,” a spokesman for Cologne/Bonn Airport told dpa on Wednesday. Travelers are urged to check the status of their flight with their airline or tour operator in advance.

According to a spokesman, Düsseldorf Airport wants to maintain emergency operations. A significantly reduced flight plan for the day of the strike is being worked out together with the airline partners.

Originally, 368 flight movements were planned for Friday.

In Baden-Würrtemberg, in addition to Stuttgart, a day-long warning strike was also called at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport. The union announced on Wednesday in Stuttgart that longer waiting times and even flight cancellations or cancellations are to be expected.

He cannot yet provide any information on the effects, said the managing director of Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport, Uwe Kotzan. They are talking to the company concerned and will try to secure the air security checks so that no flights are cancelled. So far, no flight cancellations are known. Passengers should obtain information from their airline or tour operator and be prepared for longer waiting times.

According to Verdi, the service providers FraSec and Securitas Aviation, which work in aviation security and passenger and goods inspection, are on strike in Stuttgart. Employees of the companies that provide ground handling services and employees of the airport’s operating company were also called on to strike, Verdi said. In Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden there is a strike at a company that is responsible for passenger control.

According to Verdi, the background to the warning strikes are negotiations on payment in the aviation security industry and the wage dispute in the public sector. Verdi last called for a warning strike at Stuttgart Airport on February 17. Regular flight operations were not possible at the time. Around 20,000 air passengers had to change their travel plans. More than 160 flights were canceled.
