North. A young man fatally hit by a car during a motor rally

A young man died overnight from Saturday to Sunday hit by a vehicle during an undeclared gathering of car enthusiasts in a supermarket parking lot in Somain, in the North, firefighters said.

The victim, aged between 20 and 30 according to the first observations, was thrown several meters by the shock, and died on the spot, said the firefighters. The driver of the car that hit him was arrested, they said.

The mayor’s anger

The facts occurred when “many people” were gathered in the parking lot, for an “unofficial gathering of car racing enthusiasts”.

The mayor of the town, Julien Quennesson expressed “anger” in a press release posted on Facebook, indicating that he had “for years called on the competent services and authorities to put an end to these gatherings which impact the tranquility of the Somainois”.

“As late as Friday, I once again questioned the state services on the situation,” he said, calling on “everyone to measure the consequences and take the necessary decisions”.

An investigation “must make it possible to determine the exact circumstances in which this tragic death took place”, he added.
