Qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix was won by Lando Norris, who beat Max Verstappen quite significantly. Oscar Piastri and George Russell started from the second row. The third row belonged to Pérez and Leclerc, the fourth to Alonso and Stroll, the fifth to Gasly and Sainz.
Sainz and Hamilton did not make it to Q3, and the Brit was also penalized for holding up Pérez in qualifying. He was 14th at the start.
Williams drivers stood in the last row. Sargeant did not take part in qualifying after a crash in the final practice session, while Albon finished a fine eighth but was disqualified due to non-compliant floor dimensions.
Race
Most riders started the race on a medium compound. Lando Norris has never held the top position after starting from the first place and someone else was in the lead in the second lap. It was no different in Zandvoort. Max Verstappen got ahead of him at the start. Oscar Piastri also lost one position, ahead of Russell. Leclerc had a good start, overtaking Pérez.
After the first lap, Verstappen led ahead of Norris, Russell, Piastre, Leclerc, Pérez, Gasly, Alonso, Sainz and Stroll rounded out the top ten.
Sainz got ahead of Alonso and then Gasly after 9 laps. Hamilton also advanced, who in the first laps overtook Hülkenberg and both Astons.
Norris was able to hold on to Verstappen. His loss was around 1.5 seconds. Later, however, Verstappen’s lead was brought within reach by DRS and he overtook him on the finish line on the 18th lap.
Charles Leclerc stuck with Piastri, which was rather surprising after Friday and Saturday when Ferrari were skeptical. Ferrari took a bit of a risk and called Leclerc into the pits after only 24 laps.
Thanks to an earlier stop, Leclerc got ahead not only of Piastri, who took his first stint, but also ahead of Russell.
Verstappen built after 27 laps. Norris a lap later, but his lead was already so big before the stop that there was no question of an undercut by the Red Bull rider.
Piastri built after 33 laps. He gradually overtook Russell and overtook him on the 40th lap. At that time he was 3.5 seconds behind Leclerc.
The other Ferrari driver also did well. Sainz got ahead of Pérez on lap 47.
Both Mercedes drivers pitted for the second time and put on soft tyres. However, they could not reach the peak by the end of the race.
Lando Norris increased his lead over Verstappen in the second stint and even set the fastest lap of the race in the last lap.
Although Piastri overtook Leclerc, who had older tires, he was unable to overtake him. The Monacan thus won third place.
Lando Norris cruised to his second career victory. McLaren then reduced the loss to Red Bull by 12 to the current 30 points.
All 20 riders finished the race.

71/72: All 20 cars still on the track.
69/72: Norris increased the lead to 20 seconds!
68/72: It doesn’t look like the Mercedes will finish Pérez. Although his lead has decreased, it remains around 7 seconds.
64/72: Alonso moves ahead of Hülkenberg to 10th.
62/72: If we count correctly, McLaren would now reduce the loss to Red Bull by another 11 points.
61/72: Russell less than 10 seconds behind Pérez. Gasly gets ahead of Hülkenberg.
55/72: Russell heads to the pits. He falls behind Sainz and Pérez.
52/72: Piastri has not yet found a recipe for Leclerc, who holds third place.
52/72: Hamilton sets the fastest lap of the race. But he loses 25 seconds to the seventh Pérez.
49/72: Hamilton in the pits for the second time. Slips on soft. He was eighth, he remained eighth…
47/72: Sainz ahead of Pérez!
45/72: Sainz is attacking Pérez, but for now he is trailing behind him.
44/72: The Australian Express arrives in Monaco.
42/72:

40/72: Piastri ahead of Russell and 3.6s behind Leclerc.
38/72: Piastri overtook Russell.

30/72: Pérez’s stop was longer… 4.4s. In the Sainz pits.
29/72: Pérez heads to the pits, which is a shame. He had a chance to take the lead for the first time this year. Piastri and Sainz remain on track.
28/72: Norris in the pits… Piastri took the lead. He comes back about 5 seconds ahead of Verstappen.
27/72: Verstappen in the pits.

24/72: Leclerc tried it on Piastri and heads to the pits.

24/72: Hamilton in the pits.
23/72: Leclerc is already trying it on Piastri.
22/72: It’s tight behind the first two riders. Piastri loses 1.2 seconds and is less than a second behind Leclerc.
22/72: And now Norris 2.3s ahead of Verstappen. Hamilton overtook Gasly, battle for eighth place.
20/72: But now Verstappen lost DRS. Yet…
19/72: But Verstappen can hold on to Norris. It will be interesting during the stops. Russell loses 5 seconds.

15:00: Riders head out for a warm-up lap…
14:59: Medium at the start is a strategy that Pirelli did not count on in its predictions…
14:58: Tires for the start:
- Cunoda, Hamilton and Bottas on soft,
- others in secondary schools.
14:49: The atmosphere in Zandvoort:
14:47: The Dutch national anthem was played in Zandvoort. First time today and…?
14:47: Starting grid

14:42: Sargeant thanked the mechanics for building the new car. Are we seeing his last race? There is speculation about the untimely end of the American pilot.
14:35: Zandvoort was supposed to return to the calendar in 2020, but due to covid it happened a year later. So far, all three races have been won by Verstappen, who will make his 200th start today at his home track. How are the other current drivers doing with the number of starts?
14:30: And the start will be very important, because overtaking in Zandvoort is quite bad. Another opportunity will be pit stops.
Before the weekend, it was expected that we would see more soft and medium tires. After Saturday, however, Pirelli is also expecting a tough one. Either way, we’ll probably only see one stop.
14:27: Norris will have to overcome the curse a bit today. If he already started from pole position (including the sprint), he was not in the lead after the first lap.
Race / sprint Driver in the lead after the first round GP of Russia 2021 Carlos Sainz GP of São Paulo 2023 (sprint) Max Verstappen GP of China 2024 (sprint) Lewis Hamilton GP of Spain 2024 George Russell GP of Hungary 2024 Oscar Piastri
At the start this year, Norris generally lost positions quite often:
GP At the start After the first round Difference Miami 5 6 -1 Emilia Romagna 2 2 0 Monaco 4 4 0 Canada 3 3 0 Spain 1 3 -2 Austria 2 2 0 Great Britain 3 4 -1 Hungary 1 3 -2 Belgium 4 7 -3
14:23: The riders have already made their way to the starting grid.
14:22: Max Verstappen will stand next to Norris in the first row. Piastri and Russell will be in the second. Pérez, who will start from fifth position, had a relatively solid qualification in terms of position on the grid.
14:21: Max Verstappen won qualifying yesterday and it was Verstappen’s biggest loss to a McLaren driver this season. In percentage terms, it is 0.511%.
How was it elsewhere where the McLaren driver was beaten?
- Hungary: 0.061%
- Britain: 0.073%
- Spain: 0.028%
- Monaco: 0.204%
14:19: We saw some interesting things at the drive parade today:

14:17: It’s dry in Zandvoort, the track temperature reached 31°C, the air is only 19°C, so we’re a little envious.
14:10: The 15th race of the season awaits us, the first after the summer break. Lando Norris will start from pole position.
There were a few changes after qualifying. Lewis Hamilton was penalized for blocking Pérez in qualifying. Instead of three places, however, it eventually drops by two. Alex Albon was disqualified because his floor did not meet the technical rules.
Kevin Magnussen then fitted new electronics and battery and will start from the pits.
