Norovirus Outbreak at Flevo Hospital in Almere: Stomach, Liver, and Intestinal Departments Affected

The norovirus in the Flevo Hospital in Almere has spread to the stomach, liver and intestinal department. One patient has tested positive, two employees are showing symptoms consistent with the highly contagious virus, but have not yet been tested, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Norovirus was already diagnosed on Saturday in nine patients and eight employees in the cardiology department. All sick patients have gone into contact isolation, two of them are now symptom-free. The nursing department of the cardiology department is closed to new patients. All hospital employees who have complaints are at home and must stay there until they have been free of complaints for 24 hours.

Cleaning

It is still unclear when the cardiology department will reopen. According to the hospital, this depends on whether new cases are added. Once everyone has recovered, everything must be thoroughly cleaned before the department opens its doors again.

The norovirus leads to inflammation of the intestines, is very contagious and is also known as stomach flu. The virus is found in the feces and vomit of someone who carries the virus. In most cases, the complaints disappear after one to four days. Complaints include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. (AP)
