Health authorities have confirmed the presence of Norovirus, a bacteria causing cases of gastroenteritis, in oysters from the Arcachon Basin.
The marketing of oysters from the Arcachon Basin was prohibited until further notice, Wednesday December 27, due to the recent discovery of a bacteria, Norovirus, by the health authorities. This is described as one of the most common causes of gastroenteritis, cases of which increased in New Aquitaine on December 25 and 26.
In a press release, the oyster farmers denounced a situation which, according to them, was not within their control. The Arcachon Basin “is a victim of the saturation of wastewater and rainwater networks, causing overflows into the natural environment and thus contaminating the areas of production”we can read in the press release published by the Arcachon Aquitaine Regional Shellfish Farming Committee.
A few days before New Year’s Eve, this announcement obviously constitutes a terrible setback for the oyster farming sector, which has also been particularly affected this year. At the beginning of November, several hectares of oyster beds were in fact partially or completely destroyed after a storm passed through the Banc d’Arguin.
