At an extraordinary meeting on Friday, the Cabinet of Ministers decided to cancel the “Rimi” Riga marathon planned for this weekend.
“There were many misunderstandings and ambiguities in the meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, which were not overcome to the end,” the director of the Riga Marathon said in a conversation with LETA about the decisive meeting of the Latvian government.
“On the one hand, there seemed to be a lot of 15,000 participants in one place. We tried to explain that these were nine events in two days in Covid-19, of which the competitions in each distance complied with the disease control rules. We had all the necessary permits,” in favor of the marathon was called Nords.
“An Olympic qualification was scheduled for Sunday, which will not happen now,” Nords said of the athletic side. “It’s irrelevant now. If the government sees the abolition of the marathon as an important step in dealing with Covid-19, so be it. We ourselves have said that health comes first, and in that sense the decision to cancel the marathon is the right one. . “
