Nordio at the Venice prison, we will support recovery projects

(ANSA) – VENICE, 15 AUGUST – “It is the government’s intention, as already well outlined in the recent ‘prison decree’, to promote and strengthen every project capable of promoting the recovery paths of those who are serving a sentence. To achieve them, everyone’s collaboration is needed: from the precious involvement of civil society to the commitment of prisoners, up to the fundamental role of the prison police personnel to whom I would like to send a special thank you for the efforts made, the professionalism and humanity demonstrated every day”. These were the words of the Minister of Justice, Carlo Nordio, who today visited the women’s prison in Venice Giudecca. The Keeper of the Seals greeted the 94 prisoners present, of whom approximately half are foreigners. Subsequently, he met the personnel in service at the institute, which has a total of over 140 units including prison police, administrative staff, educators and cultural mediators, expressing to them “closeness and thanks for the difficult task carried out daily with great professionalism and a very high sense of duty”. “I think that with the appointment of the extraordinary commissioner, and with the implementation of the new Prison Decree – Nordio added – within the next two or three months we will begin to see the results”. “With the appointment of a commissioner and the allocation of funds – he concluded – we expect to reach important goals, which however cannot be achieved in the space of a morning”.
