Next to last. These were the conditions when Örebro SK hosted Östersunds FK at home at Behrn Arena on Wednesday – and rarely has “anxiety meeting” been a more appropriate word to describe a match.
The first half was goalless, and with ten minutes left to play, it was still 0-0 on the scoreboard. Then the club icon Nordin Gerzic stepped into the action and became a great match hero.
Martin Broberg got the ball in front of goal and fired a shot that Aly Keita in the ÖFK goal saved, but on the return Gerzic stayed ahead and pushed in 1-0 to Örebro. A goal followed by wild scenes of joy.
In overtime, Martin Broberg set the final score at 2-0 and Örebro thus took three, which may prove to be absolutely decisive, points in the battle for a new Allsvenskan contract.
– I have bothered myself this jump higher up the track in a more offensive role, says Nordin Gerzic to the local newspaper NA, and tells about his goal:
– It is important for the whole team, that we get something to believe in, that we can score goals, that we can win matches and keep a clean sheet. Very nice.
The three-pointer means that Örebro is now approaching Mjällby in the negative qualifying spot, at the time of writing there is a difference of one point between the teams. The distance to safe ground is not very far either, as Degerfors is only two points ahead of ÖSK in the table.
Nordin Gerzic knows how important Wednesday’s victory was.
– The supporters have worked hard, we have worked extremely hard to win matches and the club has worked to give us the conditions. We’ve been having a hard time for a while. I knew about the importance of this match but still tried to keep expectations down in the squad. I did not want people to come in and be excited, he says to NA.
For Örebro, an away meeting with Malmö FF awaits on Saturday.
