“It sounds technical, but it is a necessary administrative step. Certification of the pipeline is impossible, and without this certification, Nord Stream 2 cannot start work,” Scholz said.
Certificate revocation
How says Spiegel, The German Ministry of Economy has already suspended the certification process for Nord Stream 2.
Federal Economics Minister Robert Habeck (the Greens) in a letter on Tuesday morning instructed his accountable Federal Network Agency to revoke the initially positive certificate, which is critical to the pipeline’s upcoming certification, SPIEGEL previously learned in government circles.
The certificate, issued by the previous government at the end of October, concerns the security of natural gas supplies to Germany, which, as it was then believed, would not be jeopardized by the commissioning of Nord Stream 2.
According to the letter, this is no longer the case due to a reassessment of the geostrategic situation and in view of the escalation in eastern Ukraine. “Approval without this certificate is impossible,” the ministry said.
