Nord Info – Seine-Nord Europe Canal: heading towards employment

The Seine-Nord Europe canal represents a real opportunity for the economic development of the region, the North and Cambrésis in particular. The first recruitments are under way.

The signing in early April of three agreements for the Canal Seine-Nord Europe (CSNE) – Canal Entreprises, Canal Emploi and Canal Formation – marks the starting point of a new phase for employment in our territory.

If the CSNE project, which will link the Oise to the North, has already made it possible to recruit 400 people, including 26 in integration, it should mobilize a total of up to 6,000 jobs at the height of the site, including around 3,000 people recruited specifically to build the infrastructure.

The North will also host one of the four inland ports planned on the route of the project, that of Cambrai-Marquion:

A real economic stake, carried by the Hauts-de-France region, the Cambrai agglomeration community and the Osartis-Marquion community of municipalities, this port will allow the import and export of agricultural products, heavy goods (sand, rubble ) or containers, contributing the development of local businesses and generating long-term jobs.

29 trades identified

During the construction phase, the construction of the Seine-Nord Europe Canal will require many technical skills. 29 professions are particularly affected. The labor requirements include in particular:

  • 1,000 machine operators and workers to dig the canal;
  • 500 formworkers and scrap metal workers, as well as welders to build bridges and locks;
  • 300 specialized road workers to restore the roads;
  • 300 supervisory staff;
  • mechanics, crane operators, refuellers, assemblers, topographers, green space workers and even ecologists.

Remember that in the North, the work phase is scheduled for 2023.

All employment stakeholders are mobilized

To meet this demand, job seekers and RSA beneficiaries who will mobilize will be able to benefit from solid and adapted training, thanks to the mobilization of all public actors.

  • The Seine-Nord Europe Canal Company,
  • The Hauts-de-France region
  • Employment center
  • The Department of the North

These training courses will also be set up near the route.

Finally, to facilitate the access of Northerners furthest from employment to this site, the Department of the North is supporting the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe in the implementation of an integration clause.

To do this, all the contracts awarded by the Société du Canal Seine-Nord Europe are analyzed and the most relevant ones benefit from an insertion clause. which engages the incumbent company to hire people excluded from employment (long-term unemployed, RSA beneficiary, disabled person, etc.).

Jobs to support the site

A project of this scope will also generate thousands of indirect jobs over the years, to provide the necessary logistics around the works:

  • transport of personnel and materials;
  • cleaning of offices and living areas;
  • catering teams;
  • site security;
  • staff accommodation;
  • equipment rental.

If one of these careers interests you, contact your employment coach, your RSA referent or your Pôle emploi advisor. Everyone will be able to guide you in this project and direct you to the best opportunities.

The Seine-Nord Europe Canal: a sustainable project

The project combines economic ambitions and environmental challenges, since it will develop an efficient ecological transport solution : by accommodating boats that can hold 4,400 tonnes of goods – or the equivalent of 220 trucks – it will eventually relieve the A1 of nearly 500,000 trucks per year. It will also model nnew landscapes (ecological banks, plantations, wetlands) and will promote the protection and development of different animal and plant species, while offering leisure activities such as hiking and cycling.
