Norberto depression brings wind, cold and snow

The Norberto depression is affecting mainland Portugal between today and Saturday, implying a cold front with strong winds, falling temperatures and snowfall above 1,200 and 1,400 meters, IPMA warned today.

In a statement, the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and the Atmosphere (IPMA) states that the wind will blow strong (up to 40 kilometers / hour) during today, with gusts reaching up to 65 kilometers / hour on the coast and 90 kilometers / hour in the highlands.

According to the institute, the Norberto depression will cause strong maritime unrest, with northwest waves measuring four to five meters north of Cabo Raso, in Cascais, in the district of Lisbon.

With an associated cold front, the depression passed through the northern and central regions of mainland Portugal in the early hours of the day, then crossing the southern region.

The Norberto depression caused periods of heavy rain until early in the morning, particularly in the Minho and Douro Litoral regions, according to the IPMA.

According to the institute, the rainy periods will reach the South region today, and then go on to a regime of weak and infrequent showers, which will be essentially in the North and Center regions.

Météo France (State Meteorological Agency of France) named the depression Norberto because it has very low pressure on the Bay of Biscay and is moving eastwards.
