Nina Derwael may have finished at the top of the standings in the first live show, but it was Nora Gharib (28) who went on to walk with the highest score of the evening. “Hey, I really didn’t expect it,” the actress responds.

Whoever thought that a Viennese waltz was a rather dusty dance, will beep very differently after Saturday evening. Nora Gharib has created a moving choreography about a relationship that is breaking down. “I also had the wrong idea about that dance beforehand. I didn’t really know what it meant and hoped I didn’t have to do it,” she laughs. “That seemed so dead to me. I didn’t think we could tell anything with it, because you just float on the floor. But I underestimated it so much and on the contrary it brought up a lot of emotions.”

The images of the rehearsals showed how Gharib could not keep it dry. The actress decided to divorce her husband earlier this year. “Four days ago, this was not what it looked like. For some reason I didn’t want to empathize. I think I blocked those emotions. But Adrian, who has put together a top choreo by the way, kept pushing and encouraging me. I woke up because I thought I was disappointing him. So then I just went for it. I thought: fuck it, we just let those emotions go.”

Danger

Jury member Jan Kooijman called Gharib a very good actress and dancer. He thought it was insanely beautiful. Wim Vanlessen said that she had shown the magic of dancing with her way of telling stories. In addition to all those compliments, she received 32 points from the jury, the same as Nina Derwael last week. “Hey! I had seen everyone’s dance during the dress rehearsal and there were some of them that I thought: they are going to have the highest score. So I really didn’t expect it to be us. Everyone is doing so well and improving very hard.”

Despite that high score, Nora was not reassured of her spot in the next round until her name was called. “I think that after such a score there is also the danger that people will think: ‘It has high points, so it won’t be out anyway’ and then stop voting. But I’m really glad the viewers did.”
