Northern lights, also called aurora borealis or aurora borealis is caused by electrically charged particles emitted by the sun. The particles travel at high speed through the atmosphere and collide with each other. Energy is released, resulting in special light phenomena in the sky.
The Northern Lights are more visible the closer you are to the Arctic Circle. The sky turned green last night on the Orkney Islands and on Iceland, both of which are much more northerly than the Netherlands.
