The reform initiative that will seek to prohibit reelection to elected positions only targets members of the Executive and Legislative Branches, and will not include judges, magistrates and Ministers, President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo explained this Thursday.
Questioned about the issue in her morning press conference at the National Palace, the head of the Executive pointed out that given that a reform of the Judiciary was recently approved and it has its own mechanisms and rules for the election of judges, magistrates and ministers, it is not thinking about including it in the initiative that will prohibit re-election.
“I believe in non-reelection,” declared the president, who explained in the electoral campaign that she also perceived that the population opposes reelection.
He added that the initiative that he will send soon to seek to outlaw reelection will include the president, governors and municipal presidents, as well as legislators.
“The Judiciary has its own reform and its own rules,” he added.
Regarding the initiative to prohibit direct relatives of a ruler from running to replace their relatives in positions such as the Presidency of the Republic, Sheinbaum Pardo stated that he will seek to have this prohibited in the Executive at all levels of government.
He added that if a direct relative of, for example, a municipal president or a governor, wants to run for office, they could not do so immediately, but would have to wait a period of three years to seek candidacy.
