As a result of the sky-high inflation, all kinds of things, including wages, are indexed. This does not apply to inheritance taxes, as a result of which the heirs indirectly have to swallow a tax increase.
Why is this important?
Thanks to the indexation, our wages, among other things, are adjusted to the increased cost of living. The same applies to the brackets in the personal income tax. This ensures that we do not suddenly end up in a higher tax bracket due to the indexation of wages. This system is not applied to inheritance tax.In the news: Tax expert Michel Maus recently denounced in a column HLN.be the non-indexation of inheritance tax.
- In Flanders you pay 3 percent inheritance tax in a straight line on a first bracket of up to 50,000 euros. That rate rises to 27 percent on the tranche above 250,000 euros.
- The inheritance tax on an inheritance between persons who are not direct relatives is considerably higher. A rate of 25 percent applies to the first bracket up to 35,000 euros. On everything above 75,000 euros
