Non-essential trips, second residences, parks: Pieter De Crem takes stock of a sunny weekend

The National Security Council (CNS) will probably very soon formalize the cancellation of the major summer festivals – including Tomorrowland and Rock Werchter – as requested by the mayors of the communes concerned, Interior Minister Pieter De Crem said on Monday , on La Première (RTBF). The mayors of Boom and Artselaar – for the electronic music festival Tomorrowland – and of Werchter – for Rock Werchter – have indicated that in their view, these world-wide events could not be organized this year because of the coronavirus crisis.

“The mayors are awaiting a decision from the CNS to clarify the situation. According to them, these festivals cannot take place. The decision will have to be formalized by the CNS as soon as possible, but yes unfortunately, we must expect a cancellation”, commented on Mr. De Crem.

The Minister of the Interior also wished to thank the Belgian population for respecting the containment measures this weekend, when the sun and the high temperature had raised fears of unauthorized groupings.

“There have been very few trips around the area by car: people have not moved to their second residence, for example in the Ardennes or on the Coast. But from time to time, in public places – hotspots as they are called – the police had to intervene to enforce the distancing for people who had gathered. ” The police can verbalize. The possibility of imposing an administrative penalty of 250 euros with immediate perception should appear shortly in the Moniteur, after the settlement this Saturday by the government of a legal problem.
