The competition “Golden Apple Tree 2021” was attended by 54 publishers with 133 books, of which the jury nominated 40 books in 8 categories – poetry, prose, reference literature, documentaries, scientific and art publications, books for children and books for youth. The prize for a lifetime contribution to book publishing is given to Dace Pugača, a long-term executive director of the Latvian Association of Publishers, who has dedicated 26 years of work to book publishing.

The compliance of the books with the criteria set by the competition was assessed by a jury of 5 experts: Ieva Bečere – Chairwoman of the Jury, Executive Director of the Latvian Association of Printing Companies; Aiga Dzalbe – art historian and critic, assistant professor at the Department of Art History of the Latvian Academy of Arts; Gita Treice – book illustrator, painter; Arta Ozola-Jaunarāja – book illustrator, graphic artist and Ivs Zenne – LMA assistant professor, graphic designer. The jury evaluated the design concept of the submitted books, its compliance with the content, layout, choice of paper and printing.
The closing ceremony of the competition will take place on April 11. The Latvian National Museum of Art, where the 8 winners of the competition will be announced, has been awarded the Artist of the Year award, special jury awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award in book publishing.
The organizers of the competition invite readers to get acquainted with the nominated books.
No 11.-13. They will be on display at the “Latvian Book Exhibition 2022” in Kipsala. On March 14, the readers’ vote for the most beautiful book of 2021 will start on the portal “LSM.lv” and will end on April 7. From March 16, the books will be available at the Riga Central Library and throughout the year in 9 branches of the library. From March 22, they will be available on an interactive stand in the foyer of the 3rd floor of the Latvian National Museum of Art. On April 21, the books will be on display in Sigulda, Devon, which is the first stop on the tour of Latvian cultural centers.
