Of movie Nomadland by Chinese director Chloé Zhao has won the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival. It was the first time in ten years that a woman won the top prize, the last time Sofia Coppola was ahead Somewhere.
Nomadland tells the story of a woman, played by Frances McDormand, who travels through the western United States during the Great Depression.
Due to the corona outbreak, the festival was considerably stripped down: the hall was only half full and masks were required. Paparazzi had to trade their boats, which they usually use to chase movie stars, for permanent places on land. Both Zhao and McDormand were present via video connection.
“How nice that we were able to come to your festival in this strange, strange world,” said McDormand. Earlier this year, the Cannes Film Festival was canceled due to the pandemic.
British Vanessa Kirby won the prize for best actress for the drama Pieces of a Woman. Best Actor was Italian Pierfranscesco Favino from Stepfather.
