Nokia smartphone shipments are finally growing

Jakarta, Selular.ID – HMD Global’s struggle in the smartphone market with the Nokia brand has finally paid off. The latest market data shows things are getting better for the company.

Counterpoint Research (via NokiaMob) reported 2 million Nokia smartphones shipped in the first quarter of 2021. That’s an increase of nearly 18% from the 1.7 million units shipped the same quarter a year earlier.

The increase is attributed to HMD Global’s strong performance in Africa and parts of Europe. A total of 11 million Nokia feature phones were shipped during the quarter, up from 8.6 million in Q1 2020.

In the smartphone arena, HMD Global has dropped from number 17 to number 18 on the list of the world’s top manufacturers. Even though the company once peaked at number 8 in mid-2018.

But the good news is that the growth in shipments above (the first in nearly two years) happened before the brand launched an updated line of smartphones comprising the Nokia C, Nokia G, and Nokia X lines.

The company’s brand-new lineup has recently started circulating around the world, so the impact is predicted to be felt in August when the current quarterly delivery figures are announced.

In Q2 2020, as many as 1.4 million Nokia smartphones were shipped. So it shouldn’t be too difficult to go over last year’s figures.
