Samsung will exploit the know-how and intellectual property of Nokia for video standards. It is the result of a patent license agreement signed by the two companies, through which the South Korean group will have the right to use the innovative solutions of the Finnish company against the payment of royalties.
Samsung therefore chooses Nokia (that of the infrastructure, not that of HMD), after the stormy relations experienced over the last decade with another Scandinavian reality – Ericsson. It was precisely with the Swedish company that there were disagreements – which ended up in court – over the Asian giant’s alleged infringement of a series of patents, a case later resolved by an agreement on granting. global licenses to the two companies.
So we open new collaboration page between the two giants of the technology sector: Samsung will be able to reap profits in the market through the use of inventions resulting from Nokia’s research and development activity, and Nokia will have the opportunity to increase its revenues by providing its own standards and solutions for multimedia and video to an extremely strategic client. For some time, the realities have been working together through agreements on the use of patents: the last contract dates from 2018 and provided for the possibility for Samsung to access various intellectual properties of Nokia against the payment of royalties.
Over the past 20 years, Nokia has invested more than 129 billion euros in R&D and can count on 20,000 patent families, including 3,500 in the 5G field.
