With his European flag, yellow hat, loud music and shouts of “Stop Brexit!”, Steve Bray has become something of a mascot for the British anti-Brexit movement – but now he is to be silenced.
After police officers moved in near the Parliament building in London Bray’s amplifier system on Tuesday, the 53-year-old permanent protester defiantly announced on Wednesday that in future he would “twice as loud” protest.
However, when he arrived with new equipment, the authorities informed him that loud protests in the area would be prohibited under a new law. Bray then withdrew to an alcove on a street corner opposite Parliament, which he believes is not covered by the new law. He will always find a loophole to continue protesting, he said.
Bray has been demonstrating against Brexit and corruption in front of Parliament in Westminster since 2017. Shouting slogans at politicians and appearing on live broadcasts, he has since become a national celebrity. Bray particularly enjoys demonstrating during Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s question time in the House of Commons, playing the song “Liar” by the Sex Pistols or “Money, Money, Money” by Abba.
