The 75th NHK Kohaku Uta Gassen, Japan’s legendary New Year’s Eve music spectacle, is poised to captivate audiences worldwide on December 31st. this year’s show promises a dazzling array of both established superstars and exciting debut acts, ensuring a night of unforgettable performances.
One of the highlights of this year’s lineup is the immensely popular J-Pop group Nogizaka46, marking thier tenth consecutive appearance. During rehearsals,Captain minami Umezawa expressed the meaning of this milestone: “When I saw the number 10,I felt a weight. We have been working on a special stage (of Kohaku Uta Gassen) for a long time, so we would like to express our gratitude for being able to stand here,” she enthusiastically shared.
The pressure of performing on such a high-profile stage is undeniable. Shiori Kubo, another member of Nogizaka46, admitted, “We rehearsed, but I never got used to it, and there’s a unique sense of tension. The members have changed and we will be performing songs without the original members, so I think there will be some tension.” This year’s performance of “Kikake,” a song originally released eight and a half years ago, will be particularly poignant, as Sakura Endo noted, “I think it will be a different stage than the last stage, and I think it will be delivered closer to the audience. This song was written eight and a half years ago,and the current members weren’t there when it was released, but I hope we can perform with the current members and beleive that there is meaning in delivering this song.”
Adding to the anticipation,Umezawa hinted at a special collaboration, stating,”I think we’ll be able to deliver a shining atmosphere that’s different from what we usually do.” The show’s hosts will also be a frist for the Kohaku Uta Gassen: hiroyuki Ariyoshi, Kanna Hashimoto, Sari Ito, and Naoko Suzuki, marking the first time the leads from both halves of a popular morning drama will take on hosting duties. Ariyoshi returns for his second year as host.
last year’s competition saw the Red Team victorious, bringing their total wins to 34,compared to the White Team’s 40 wins throughout the show’s history. This year’s 75th anniversary promises to be a thrilling contest, with a blend of established talent and fresh faces ready to make their mark on this iconic Japanese tradition.
