Roger Federer, Andy Roddick

Roger Federer and Andy Roddick have a long history, which often ended to the disadvantage of the American. Roddick only managed three victories against the Swiss maestro, who in turn won 21 times when the two played against each other.

Federer and Roddick faced each other four times at Wimbledon, with Federer winning all four matches. This prevented Roddick from winning more than just his one Grand Slam title (2003 at the US Open). “I’d like to hate you, but you’re just very nice,” Roddick once said at an awards ceremony on the hallowed turf.

Now the two have had another exchange of blows. Roddick is a new member of the Wilson racket family, after spending his entire career with Babolat rackets. And Federer is currently promoting the latest model of his Wilson Pro Staff.

Asked if he thought any of the Wimbledon finals would have been different if Roddick had played with Wilson back then, Federer joked: “I think he would have beaten me with it in the semifinals in 2003. And then I probably would have believed that I could never win Wimbledon. And never would have won it. (…) He could have changed the whole story! He could have broken me early, before I had the run of five titles in a row.”

Roddick on Federer: “The least he can do for me”

Roddick countered this narrative in his own way. “Whatever,” he tweeted. And added (jokingly): “Nobody likes Roger Federer anyway.”

Nevertheless, he would of course allow Federer to stop by his Served podcast. “It’s the least he can do for me after all the Wimbledon finals.”

Federer is of course aware of the podcast, as he previously explained. “Andy is a great guy, the best,” Federer enthused. “Whenever I hear something from him, I have a smile on my face. It reminds me of the old days.”
