  • Shortly before the Oscars, an award was presented that probably nobody is happy about: the “Golden Raspberry” or “Razzies”.
  • One production was “awarded” with five raspberries.
  • Hollywood star Will Smith, on the other hand, actually had reason to be happy.

The musical drama “Diana the Musical” won five “Golden Raspberries” or “Razzies”, as the lenders of the not-too-serious prizes announced in a video message on Saturday. The production about the life of Princess Diana, which flopped on New York’s Broadway, has been brought to the streaming service Netflix. There were “Razzies” for leading actress Jeanna de Waal, for the direction and as “worst film”.

Hollywood star Will Smith receives the “Redeemer Award”

A three-time “winner” is the animated fantasy film “Space Jam: A New Legacy,” starring basketball player LeBron James as “Worst Actor.” Oscar winner Jared Leto (“Dallas Buyers Club”) also got a “razzie” as a supporting actor in “House of Gucci”. The distributors had come up with a special division for Bruce Willis, on the grounds that he had eight bad roles in 2021, including in films such as “American Siege”, “Deadlock” and “Cosmic Sin”. The latter was now his undoing.

Hollywood star Will Smith was luckier as the recipient of the “Razzies Redeemer Award”. The “Redeemer Prize” goes to actors who make up for a “raspberry” from the past with a good cinematic performance. In the eyes of the jury, Smith managed to do this with his role in the sports drama “King Richard”, which could also earn the actor the Oscar for best actor on Sunday.

The “Razzies” were created by filmmaker John Wilson as a counterpart to the glamorous Oscars. According to the group, more than 1,100 members in the United States and four dozen other countries vote.

They were promising big-name talents in Hollywood. But for these actors, things didn’t go uphill after an Oscar.
