Noboa emphasizes that the wave of violence in Ecuador at the beginning of the year was “an attempted coup d’état”

The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, recalled this Friday the spike in violence that the South American country experienced at the beginning of the year and which reached its peak when on January 9 a group of hooded armed men took over the facilities of the TC television network, an episode that he has classified as “an attempted coup d’état.”

«We saw it as an attempted coup d’état, because that was what was planned, the first two weeks of January it was going to be carried out, they tried to destabilize the Government in every possible way, but one morning I decided to declare a State of Conflict “Non-International Armed,” said Noboa during an event on security and organized crime.

In this sense, the Ecuadorian president has valued the response given to this situation. “We dealt a strong blow and an important image that everyone saw, how we acted, how we did it and how we solved the problem,” President Noboa remarked, according to the local newspaper ‘El Universo’.

Thus, the president of Ecuador has indicated that he daily asks the attorney general, Diana Salazar, to accelerate the work to restore the normal situation in the country, where the population, he says, wants to resume their daily lives without thinking about what A war is being fought in the streets.

Finally, Noboa has spoken about the controls carried out in penitentiary centers, where the authorities have verified “how the lack of control in past years in prisons has generated death, anxiety, a total feeling of unrest among the population”, although He stressed that, thanks to his management, “that is changing.”

According to Noboa, to date more than 2,000 interventions have been carried out in the country’s prisons. In addition, thousands of weapons and ammunition have been seized, some of them even of higher quality than those possessed by the Armed Forces. Ecuador has promoted a law that allows the use of this weapon by the Army and Police.
