The president of Ecuador, Daniel Noboa, appointed Sariha Moya as the new acting vice president, replacing Verónica Abad, who was temporarily suspended from office.
The information was published in a statement by the Presidency of Ecuador where it is stated that the economist “has demonstrated an exemplary career in public service.” Before this appointment, Moya was the national secretary of Planning. Likewise, she was the Minister of Economy and Finance, in 2023.
The official replaces Abad, sanctioned by the Ministry of Labor with a “temporary suspension without pay for 150 days” for having committed the “serious offense” of “unjustified abandonment of work for three or more consecutive work days.” In addition, days ago, the Contentious Electoral Court (TCE) fined her 20 unified basic salaries, that is, $8,500, upon determining that she engaged in early campaigning in the 2023 Sectional Elections (local and provincial).
In turn, Abad filed a complaint with the Contentious Electoral Court (TCE) for alleged gender-based political violence against the president and other officials. Since the beginning of his administration, Noboa has tried to distance her from his Administration, while his former electoral partner affirms that he tries to silence her.
On this occasion, the Ecuadorian president also appointed José de La Gasca as the new Government Minister, who replaces Arturo Félix Wong, sent as a delegate to Colombia to manage the purchase of energy for Ecuador amid the prolonged cuts.
