Nobelovu cenu za literaturu získal Abdulrazak Gurnah

Abdulrazak Gurnah was born in 1948 in Zanzibar. In the 1960s, he came to the United Kingdom as a refugee and became a professor of English and literature at the University of Kent.

His novels and short stories reflect the experience of emigration and the clash of different cultures. Much returns to the subject of Africa. The Academy appreciated his approach to the topic of colonialism.

There is no work of his available in Czech.

Paradise, Afterlives, Gravel Heart, By the Sea and many others have been published in English. The novel Paradise became a Booker Prize finalist in 1994.

The prestigious award is also accompanied by a financial bonus of ten million Swedish crowns (approximately 25 million Czech crowns). It is decided by the Swedish Academy on the basis of expert nominations.

Possible candidates for the Nobel Prize have long included the Japanese writer Haruki Murakami and the Czech author Milan Kundera. There was also speculation about Philip Roth. The American poet Louise Glück won last time.
