Nobel Prize in Physics 2023: Scientists Recognized for Research on Fast Flashes of Light

Oct 3, 2023 at 12:19 PM Update: 17 minutes ago

Three scientists have received the Nobel Prize in Physics for their research into extremely fast flashes of light.

The most important science prize goes to the Frenchman Pierre Agostini, the Hungarian Austrian Ferenc Krausz and the Frenchwoman Anne L’Huillier. They conducted research into the movement of electrons within atoms and molecules.

Their research has “given humanity new tools to explore the world of electrons in atoms and molecules,” the Nobel committee says.

Electrons are tiny particles in which changes occur very quickly. It happens so fast that people can’t notice it. For electrons, time is measured in attoseconds. An attosecond is one billionth of a billionth of a second.

“There are as many attoseconds in a second as there have been seconds since the universe began,” the Nobel Committee emphasizes. The three winners have succeeded in creating lightning-fast flashes of light to make visible what is happening inside atoms.

Winners in other categories will follow

The Nobel Prize for Medicine is traditionally the first category for which the winner is announced. On Monday, that prize went to Katalin Karikó and Drew Weissman for the development of an mRNA vaccine against corona.

The Nobel Prizes for Chemistry (Wednesday), Literature (Thursday), Peace (Friday) and Economics (next Monday) will also follow in the coming days.

The winners not only receive recognition, but can also distribute a cash prize of more than 950,000 euros. They also receive a medal and a diploma.

The award ceremony will take place on December 10. That is the anniversary of the death of the Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, after whom the prizes are named.
