Nobel Peace Prize Awarded to Iranian Activist Nargis Mohammadi for Women’s Rights Advocacy

Oslo: This year’s Nobel Peace Prize goes to Iranian human rights activist Nargis Mohammadi. The award is for the fight for women’s rights. Nargis is serving her sentence in Jai when she seeks the award. She is the 19th woman to win the Nobel Peace Prize. Nargiz Mohammadi, who is serving a prison sentence for her struggles against the Iranian regime’s human rights violations, learned the news of the award in prison.

Nargiz, a journalist and activist, has been arrested 13 times as part of her fight against the Iranian regime for human rights. Nargis Mohammad has been sentenced to 31 years in prison without even a proper trial on various charges. The Nobel Prize Committee announced in Oslo that Nargiz won the award for her fight against oppression of women in Iran and for promoting freedom and human rights. The award committee assessed that they had suffered heavy personal losses due to their uncompromising struggle.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee said that by awarding the Peace Prize to Nargiz Mohammad, they are honoring the struggle for human rights, freedom and democracy of the people of Iran. Earlier, Nargis Mohammadi received the United Nations Press Freedom Award. She shared the award with Nilofar Hamidi and Elahi Mohammadi. The award is given on May 3, World Press Freedom Day, in memory of Colombian journalist Guillermo Cano, who was killed in 1986.
