The conference was attended by more than 300 foreign scientists, including more than 10 Fields Medal winners, Turing Award winners, Nobel Prize winners and more than 50 academicians from different countries. Among them was 83-year-old David Gross, a Nobel laureate in physics, a member of the US National Academy of Sciences and a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences.
David Gross emphasized the importance of basic science and appreciated Chinese President Xi Jinping’s opinion that basic science is extremely important.
He agreed that research in science needs international cooperation. As an American scientist, Gross worries about the deteriorating relationship and friction between China and the US in the field of scientific development. According to him, cooperation can be profitable for both sides.
Professor Gross is greatly impressed by the rapid development of Chinese science and technology and encourages young people to be curious and passionate about their scientific research. He hopes the countries will expand mutually beneficial innovation cooperation in various sciences.
