Noah Lyles took the gold in the 100 meters in Paris after drama

Noah Lyles won the first American gold in the 100 meters since Justin Gatlin’s gold in Athens in 2004.

He and Jamaican Kishane Thompson ran 9.79 and at first the cameras were directed to Thompson, as if he had won the race.

– Noah Lyles is getting lost here, he is not where he should be, said Jann Post on NRK.

However, after looking at the finish picture, the jury could decide that Lyles was first at the finish line – five thousandths ahead of the Jamaican.

9.79 is a new personal best for Lyles, who previously had a 9.81 as his best mark from the London Diamond League earlier this year.

However, the 27-year-old did not start well in the Olympic final and was behind in the first meters. He eventually caught up with the competitors and was finally able to stretch his neck out and cross the finish line first.

Fred Kerley of the United States won the bronze medal with 9.81, while Olympic champion Marcell Jacobs of Italy took fifth place with 9.85.

Usain Bolt holds the world record in the 100 meters with 9.58 from the toilet in Berlin in 2009.
