Noah Lyles competes in the 200 meters sick with Covid

Saint-Denis. Noah Lyles suffered an unexpected defeat in the 200 meters on Thursday, widely outclassed by Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, and ended up leaving in a wheelchair after the final of that sprint at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Shortly afterwards, and wearing a mask while speaking to reporters, the American revealed that he had Covid.

After crossing the finish line in third place for the second consecutive Olympic Games, Lyles fell onto his back and showed signs of pain. He lay there for nearly 30 seconds before getting up, asking for water and walking over to his wheelchair.

“It’s something that definitely affected my performance,” he said.

Lyles said he tested positive Tuesday morning and immediately went into quarantine.

“I still wanted to run,” he said. “They told me it was possible.”

The United States Track and Field Federation issued a statement saying that they and the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee complied with health protocols.

“After extensive medical evaluation, Noah has decided to compete tonight,” the federation’s statement said. “We respect his decision and will continue to monitor his condition closely.”

Lyles saw his ambition of completing the 100-200 double at Paris 2024 evaporate.

In the final, Tebogo and American Kenny Bednarek outpaced Lyles to take the gold and silver medals respectively.
