The new mother was very scared for her eldest son Noah, 9, who was alone in the apartment when the fire broke out. “Noah goes to school in India and comes home alone. He was in the apartment when the fire started. He called me to let me know that smoke was coming out of the heater. I thought it was wrong. ‘was okay. I told him to take off the blanket if possible. He started to cough. Then nothing. I couldn’t hear him anymore. After a few minutes, he told me he was went out to breathe on the balcony. I understood that it was serious and I told him to come out. He wanted to stay to stop the fire. Then I again lost contact with him. I thought he was unconscious. I called his uncle who lives on the 5th floor but he told me it was impossible to come down. “
Céline Jacob hurriedly quits her job and, on the way home, sees the column of black smoke in the distance. “There I really panicked. I looked for my son and saw him in the neighboring street with other inhabitants of the building. He had left the apartment alone and had warned the neighbors of the fire knocking on doors. What a relief! “
Noah will be taken care of by the firefighters and will spend the night under observation at the hospital but he does not suffer from poisoning, despite the smoke he has inhaled. The boy also saw a psychologist to discuss this traumatic experience for a child, even though Noah was pretty cool!
All is lost!
If the family is complete, safe and sound, there is now the less optimistic material aspect.
“There is nothing left. What the fire did not destroy, the smoke and the water have taken over. The children are sad. They have no more clothes, no toys. We have lost everything. But we have lost everything. will start over elsewhere, even if it is very difficult. We have to stand up for our children. They find it difficult to realize but gradually understand that they will not be able to get their things back. We went to work in the morning and in the evening , we are homeless “, explains, in tears, the mother of Noah still in shock.
A surge of solidarity
Quickly, a momentum of solidarity was put in place. Céline’s brother appealed for donations for the Breuer-Jacob family. “I can no longer answer the calls because there are so many. Help is coming from everywhere and that’s what keeps us going. That’s all we have left. Even if we are used to depend on no one. “
The family is staying with a colleague who is currently abroad for a few days. The CPAS made transit accommodation available to him for the rest. “Our priority is to find an apartment in Arlon, ideally with three bedrooms but two will do the trick, where we can settle in the long term and be able to leave for good and quickly offer a stable life to our children.”
