Nervous about the threat of some 120,000 Russian troops converging near the border, Kiev has launched a new Territorial Defense force this year, which is expected to be built into a 130,000-man corps.

While they may stand little chance against the much larger and more equipped professional Russian army, Ukrainian reservists could be tasked with protecting civilian sites in the capital in the midst of any conflict.

Saturday’s training (29/1/2022) gathered around 70 local residents.

Some of them used infantry equipment complete with hunting rifles. The group has previous combat experience, when Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 and backed rebels fighting government forces in eastern Ukraine.

They are classified as middle class professionals so they have weapons and uniforms. While others are just wooden weapons.

The US has warned that military intervention is possible and imminent. But Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy said too much “panic” was already hurting the economy of its 41 million people.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the West had not responded to Moscow’s key security demands in the crisis in Ukraine, but he was ready for dialogue to continue.

On the other hand, Western countries have threatened Russia with severe economic sanctions if it attacks Ukraine again.

Moscow insisted it did not want war, but rejected calls to withdraw its troops. The Kremlin argued that it could deploy troops on its own territory, if deemed necessary.

Russia, on the other hand, has highlighted the Western response as evidence that its country is a target, not an instigator of aggression.

Ukrainian professional soldiers are filmed being trained with British NLAW anti-tank guns for the first time.

The NLAW missile launcher is considered to have an excellent guidance system, which gives it a high probability of destroying a moving target with the first shot.

Ukraine also has US Javelin anti-tank guided missiles and its own anti-tank systems and armed drones.

US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said Friday that he does not believe that Putin “has made the final decision to use troops against Ukraine”.

But he added: “He (Putin) clearly now has the[attacking]ability.”

Putin’s close ally, Konstantin Malofeev – who runs the investment group – claims it only takes 48 hours to take Ukraine under control.

“An open military conflict between Russia and Ukraine cannot be a war, or, at least,
long-term war, because the difference in military potential is so great that there are only operations to force peace,” he said.

“It will take a maximum of 48 hours, and we can’t talk about different sides.”
