Next October 15 the government will have a not indifferent cat to peel. With the introduction of the mandatory green pass in the workplace, as decided on Thursday in the CDM, Italian prisons and streets could in fact find themselves suddenly without thousands of policemen. This is not a protest, or who knows what strike. But the effect of the decree on the vaccination passport. On 3 September, the Interior Ministry informed that 20% of police officers made use of the right not to have the serum inoculated. Until yesterday, the practical effects were limited: excluded from the canteens and forced to eat outside, the agents had complained a little. But nothing more. Now, on the other hand, they risk a hefty fine and suspension from activity, complete with a salary freeze. Unless they do a tampon (at a controlled price) every two days.
In absolute numbers, it is about 21,000 agents. “To date we are around 76,600 vaccinated compared to 98 thousand policemen”, Fabio Conestà, general secretary of Mosap, explains to Giornale. The patrols, therefore, may soon have to manage a possible drop in operational uniforms. “We cannot allow staff to be distracted from the territorial control service – continues Conestà – The staff are already lacking: the number of operators is small and any reduction due to green pass would create many problems”. Gennarino De Fazio, general secretary of the Uilpa Penitentiary Police is also on the same line. “There are 13 thousand, more than a third, the members of the Prison Police Corps who have not yet undergone even the first dose – he explains -. What would happen in the event of a suspension from the service? ». De Fazio speaks of the dangers for the “maintenance of security”, in a prison system “already in very serious emergency”: the lack of staff, without the green pass effect, has already been quantified in 17 thousand missing units.
There would obviously be a solution: it would be enough for the agents to get vaccinated, but for now there is no obligation in this regard. Alternatively, those hesitant will have to undergo swabs every 48 or 72 hours. And here, however, there is a problem of costs. Like the other workers, the policemen will also have to pay for the test out of their own pockets. Cost of the operation: about 200 euros per month each. Conestà asks that “a free tampon be ensured, considering the specific nature of the job”, but Draghi has been clear on the subject for now: there is no mention of it.
