The maypole has only given a short guest appearance in Linz this year – and it is obviously not coming back either. Because the negotiations between the maypole thieves from the Mühlviertel and the city have failed.

The maypole has been with the thieves in Neufelden in the Mühlkreis (Rohrbach district) since the beginning of May. The negotiations with the city of Linz, which were supposed to trigger the tree in accordance with customs, have failed, said Christian Mühleder from the Steinbrucher maypole crew in an interview with ORF Upper Austria on Saturday. The group was supposed to deliver the maypole to Linz in pieces – and the release was too low for the effort.
Decision by city and home association
The Mayor of Linz, Klaus Luger, told ORF Upper Austria on Saturday that the behavior of the Neufelden residents was disrespectful; that has nothing to do with custom, which is why the city and the home association decided to end the talks.

Everything had started promisingly: the tree was set up on the main square with a great stir and was removed by the Neufeldeners a little later.
Celebration with maypole donors takes place
Now the maypole will stay in the district and will be handed over to the wildlife park in Altenfelden, so the Neufeldener. The festival with the municipality of Neumarkt im Mühlkreis (Freistadt district), which donated the maypole, will take place as planned, the city said – it will be made up on July 2nd in Linz – but this time, completely contrary to tradition, without that Maypole thieves.
