A cargo ship carrying gravel crashed into the railway bridge at Alphen aan den Rijn on Friday morning, October 11. As a result, no train traffic is possible between Alphen aan den Rijn and Bodegraven for the time being. This lasted until about 3:00 PM.
Update | 3:15 PM
Train traffic is restarting. We recommend that you consult a travel planner before departure. It will take a while before the trains are running as normal again. The railway bridge is closed and locked. As a result, shipping has been temporarily halted.
Update | 12:55 pm
ProRail incident responders used a cutting torch to free the ship. We are now looking at the damage to the railway bridge and how we can repair it as best as possible.

It is not yet clear what exactly happened. We know that a freighter collided with the railway bridge just after 7am. This is now stuck under the bridge. We are working with various agencies to see how we can get the ship out from under the bridge. We will then investigate how much damage the bridge has sustained. There will be no trains running between Alphen aan den Rijn and Bodegraven until the end of the afternoon.
We can only give a good prognosis once we know what the damage to the bridge is. Helga Cuijpers, regional director at ProRail: “First of all, I am pleased that there were no casualties in this incident. But it is of course very annoying for the travelers who are the victims of this. We hope to be able to restore this as soon as possible.” We recommend checking a travel planner if you want to travel by train. Updates on this incident will follow.
