This month of November marks the eighth edition of “No Tobacco Month”. On this occasion, the City of Thionville and the Portes de France-Thionville Urban Community recall that smoking is a pediatric industrial epidemic and that it is urgent to act to prevent the entry into smoking of young people, and to achieve the objective of a tobacco-free generation by 2032 in France, and particularly in the Thionville region.
These initiatives carried out by Thionville and its agglomeration, engaged since 2021 in a local program to combat smoking, also support smokers to encourage and help them to quit.
More tobacco-free spaces
Smoking remains the main cause of preventable premature death in France. It is therefore essential to prevent tobacco exposure and use among young people as early as possible.
Thus, in spring 2024 the surroundings of the five multi-reception centers in the Thionville area, the conservatory and the Rosa-Parks high school will be tobacco-free, by municipal decree, in addition to the nineteen nursery and primary schools and the twelve parks already without tobacco. tobacco since 2021. In addition, the municipal youth council is also involved in the fight against smoking and is currently working on implementing awareness and prevention actions aimed at young people. The BTS Health and Social students at Rosa-Parks high school are involved in a 2023-2024 tutored project, entitled “Rosa-Parks tobacco-free high school”. Their actions will aim to protect and raise awareness primarily among high school students, but also among administrative and teaching staff.
The objective of banning smoking in these places particularly frequented by young people is to limit their exposure to tobacco smoke as much as possible, and to protect their health.
