“No to war in Ukraine” – protests against the Russian invasion in Liepaja / Article

“No, the war in Ukraine!” Liepāja residents expressed their position

Two politically active young people from the “For!” Movement expressed their position in Liepaja. Both with a bouquet of flowers wrapped in a ribbon of mourning and a poster with the inscription “No to war in Ukraine!” on Thursday stood at the building of the Russian Consulate General in Liepaja. Drivers of passing cars occasionally signaled after the young people left, thus expressing their attitude towards what was happening. Martins Levuškāns is a student from Liepāja who studies at Liepāja Secondary School of Music, Art and Design.

“I was born in Russia, I am a repatriate, because my ancestors live in Latvia. And that’s why I live now. I have a lot of friends in Russia and Ukraine, they write to me about the dangers in Ukrainian cities. I just can’t miss it. As people in a democracy, we have the opportunity to speak in public on such topics, and I want to take that opportunity. We had a poster “No to Ukraine!” And in the colors of the Ukrainian flag, “the man said.

Martin expresses the clear opinion that a very large part of Russian-speakers in both Latvia and Russia do not support what is happening:

“Russian-speakers, Russian citizens who expressed our support for us. We are all human and we are all against war and aggression. ”

Aleksandrs Vabelis from Liepaja was also at the Consulate General with Martin. He believes that condemnation and opinion should be expressed. It is planned to do it in Liepaja at the Consulate General of Russia organized this Sunday as well. People in Ukraine greatly appreciate this support, stressed Alexander.

“As we stood at the consulate, we were missed by a lady who spoke Russian, but very quietly, with her back to the consulate. Thank you for being there and supporting us, but you could clearly see that she did not want to be captured. “It was remembered,” said Vabelis.

In Liepaja, people react differently to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. However, several people start crying during the interviews and did not hide their fears about relatives here in Latvia or relatives, acquaintances in Ukraine.

Reactions of Liepaja residents:

“It’s shocking that something like this could happen at this time. It’s always been thought that there’s only such a hybrid war. But that’s the kind of war that could happen in Europe in the 21st century,”it’s a shock. “

“It’s very unpleasant, innocent people will die, that’s the most important thing and the worst.”

“I’m still optimistic that it won’t happen to us. They’re crazy going there, yes. What to do? Nothing.”

“Logically, it worries us, it will apply to us, too, economically, I’m afraid to think anything can be. I’m sorry for that person.”

“Of course, it is not peaceful, I personally pray for this country. It is even difficult for us to grasp the real reality from a distance. It will be interesting to see – the West is talking, but what will be the real actions that will be able to help.”

“What hinders life? As if everything is. I am a Christian, I will tell you that God is above all, will not allow the bloodshed of innocent people. We pray for all the Baltic states, for Ukraine.”

“A colleague is from Ukraine, he’s crying at work, his family has sent him that two charges have exploded a kilometer and a half away. He just got married in January, not chasing his family.”

“One said he had relatives in Ukraine, a father, a mother and two other old people, they have such a small pension, he can’t bring them here. He rents an apartment himself. I have two sons in the army. And if they are called ?!”
