“No to the return to opposing blocs”

Xi Jinping: “The two countries should work together to resolve differences through dialogue with the aim of achieving harmonious coexistence”

“Placing ourselves in front of each other is a fruitful method, it is an attitude that pushes us to evade the temptations of anachronistic returns to a world of opposing blocs”. The President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, said this, speaking in Beijing on the occasion of the meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.

“Italians, founding members of the European Union, are supporters of the importance of aggregation phenomena between countries that share interests or sensitivities – said Mattarella after a conversation with President Xi Jinping. But not contrasted with others. Indeed, it is always necessary to preserve constructive dialogue with others, however distant or different, without raising unjustified barriers. It is the meaning of multilateralism, based on certain, shared and binding rules for all”. And again, the Head of State underlined how “great, intense, profound and rapid changes” are taking place in the world, to address which a climate of “concord for a common examination” would be needed. Unfortunately today there is no such climate in the world and for this reason it is “important that there are bilateral relations” and for Italy China is “a fundamental protagonist”.

The conversation between Mattarella and Xi Jinping

China and Italy are great civilisations” and “there are changes in the world not seen in a century”, stated President Xi Jinping in the opening moments of the meeting with the head of state Sergio Mattarella in the Great Hall of the People. For this reason, the Chinese president further underlined, the two countries should work together to “resolve differences through dialogue” with the aim of “arriving at harmonious coexistence”. Mattarella also expressed his opinion in this regard. “In the various articulations here there is a precious work of diplomatic activity in this immense country. An intense and growing relationship, very important. The relationship that binds Italy and China dates back a long time, it is an ancient relationship that develops and continues to develop and it is very important for us that it develops in a positive, constructive and highly collaborative manner”, the Head of State had said shortly before, visiting the Italian Cultural Institute in Beijing.
